George Raymond Richard Martin (fødd 20. september 1948), òg kjend som GRRM,^[1] er ein amerikansk forfattar og manusforfattar av fantasy, horror og science fiction. Han er best kjend for bokserien A Song of Ice and Fire, utgangspunktet for TV-serien Game of Thrones.

Bakgrunn |

George Raymond Martin var fødd i Bayonne i New Jersey^[2] som son av hamnearbeidaren Raymond Collins Martin og kona hans Margaret Brady Martin. Han har to yngre systrer, Darleen og Janet.

Martin blei oppforstra som katolikk og tok Richard som konfirmasjonsnamn som trettenåring.^[3] Faren hans var halvt italiensk medan mora var halvt irsk.^[4] Han er også av engelsk, fransk, tysk og walisisk avstamming.^[5]

Allereie som liten skreiv han og selde «monsterforteljingar», med dramatiske opplesingar inkludert, til ungane i nabolaget.^[6]
Han selde sine første science fiction-noveller som 21-åring. Den første han selde var «The Hero», som kom ut i Galaxy si februar 1971-utgåve. «With Morning Comes Mistfall]», gjeve ut i in Analog i 1973, blei nominert til Hugo-prisen^[7] og Nebula-prisen

I 1975 blei forteljinga «...for a single yesterday» teken med i science fiction-antologien Epoch redigert av Roger Elwood og Robert Silverberg.
I 1976 gav han ut si første bok, novellesamlinga A Song for Lya and Other Stories.^[6]
